Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A food label is packed with useful information: the serving size, the number of servings, the calories per serving, the ingredients (listed from the largest amount to the smallest), allergen warnings, and a best-by date. Reading a label carefully helps you know what is inside and how much. This worksheet gives students a sample cereal label to read.
Section A on page 1 gives the Crunchy Oat Cereal label and eight questions, including a simple calorie calculation. The reference box teaches the parts of a label and shows a short Examples block, so the questions stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks why ingredients are ordered by amount, why allergen lines matter, and a multi-serving calorie problem. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on the other functional-text worksheets such as reading a recipe and reading an advertisement.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and find each label part on a real package.
Complete Section A independently using the sample label.
Discuss why the first ingredient is the one there is the most of.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Reading a Recipe Worksheet or the Nonfiction Text Features Worksheet.
