Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
A diagram is a labeled picture that shows the parts of something or how something works. A label is a word or short phrase that names one part, often with a line pointing to it, while a caption is a full sentence near the diagram that explains what the whole picture shows. This worksheet helps students tell labels from captions and read diagrams with understanding.
Section A on page 1 lists eight lines from a flower diagram and asks students to label each one a label or a caption. The reference box teaches the idea with a bicycle diagram that is not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students what a diagram shows, how a label differs from a caption, why a diagram can be clearer than a paragraph, and to write a caption of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward reading nonfiction text features.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and point out the labels and the caption on the bicycle diagram.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does this name one part, or explain the whole picture?’
Work Section B item 12 together: write a caption for a house diagram.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
Pair with the Using Headings and Captions Worksheet or the Reading a Timeline Worksheet.
