About this worksheet
A chart shows information as a picture so readers can compare amounts at a glance. To read a bar chart, you read the title for the topic, the bottom (x-axis) for each category, and the side (y-axis) for the amount, then match each bar to its label and read its height. This worksheet teaches that process with a sample bar chart.
Page 1 shows a labeled bar chart in the reference box (books read each day, Monday through Friday). Section A on page 2 asks six questions that require reading the chart – finding a value, the largest and smallest bars, and a difference. The chart is the text feature being read, so the questions point directly at it.
Section B on page 3 is short-answer about chart features: what to read first, what each axis shows, what a bar’s height means, and why charts can be clearer than paragraphs. Page 4 is a complete answer key. The skill joins Reading a Diagram and Reading a Timeline in the text-features set.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and chart aloud, pointing to the title and both axes.
Complete Section A independently, reading values straight from the chart.
Discuss Section B item 11 (why a chart can beat a paragraph) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 4 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Reading a Diagram Worksheet or the Reading a Timeline Worksheet.
