Raccoon Characteristics

Have you ever seen a raccoon? With their tell-tale masks and ringed tails, they are very hard to miss. Raccoons are fascinating creatures that live in many different areas of the world. From their heads to their toes, they have unusual characteristics — specialized body parts — that help them survive wherever they make their home.

The raccoon’s most distinct feature is its unique markings. The dark mask around a raccoon’s eyes helps it look more threatening to other animals and may also help it see better in the dark — similar to how athletes put black grease under their eyes to reduce glare. The tail usually has between five and seven dark rings. The raccoon’s thick, brownish-gray fur helps it stay warm and also helps it hide among trees and shadows.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals, which means they are most active at night and sleep during the day. Their eyes are specially made for seeing in darkness, and their ears can hear sounds from very far away. These adaptations make them highly effective nighttime hunters and foragers.

Raccoon Behavior and Diet

Raccoons are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. They are not picky eaters — raccoons will eat berries, nuts, insects, mice, birds, eggs, frogs, and even garbage left in outdoor trash cans. This varied diet is one reason raccoons can thrive in so many different environments, from forests and wetlands to suburban neighborhoods and city parks.

Some of the most remarkable features of a raccoon’s body are its paws. Their front paws look a lot like human hands, with five flexible fingers on each. Raccoons can use their paws to open latches, twist doorknobs, unscrew lids from jars, and pry open trash cans. They also use their paws to grab food from water or the ground and bring it up to their mouths. Their sharp claws help them climb trees quickly when they need to escape predators.

Raccoons are clever and adaptable animals. They usually live near trees, streams, or wetlands where food and shelter are easy to find. Hollow trees and logs make ideal dens. Although raccoons generally avoid people, they have learned to live near humans because neighborhoods offer easy access to food. Understanding raccoon behavior helps us coexist with these resourceful animals.
