About this worksheet
Plot structure is the foundation of every story students will read in grades 4-6, from short folktales to chapter-book novels. This worksheet teaches the standard five-part plot diagram in a single tight assessment: read one short narrative, then map each plot element to its part of the story.
Section A gives students the passage in five labeled chunks (A through E) and asks them to write which plot element (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) matches each chunk. The original narrative is a self-contained adventure about a bike ride that goes wrong, with each plot element clearly visible in its chunk. Section B raises the difficulty with three short-response items: why a turning-point moment is the climax and not the rising action, what would be lost if the falling action were skipped, and a transfer task asking students to name a rising-action event from any story or movie they already know.
The reference box at the top of page 1 defines each of the five plot elements at the concept level only — it deliberately does not name any specific story example so that the assessed passage is the place where students do the matching work. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key with the five plot-element mappings and three sample short responses.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students draw a quick story-mountain diagram on the side of the page.
Read the narrative aloud once for flow; on the second read, point out that the passage is already split into five lettered sections.
Have students complete Section A independently as the matching core of the worksheet.
Discuss Section B item 1 together — the climax is the moment of facing the problem head-on, not just any tense moment.
