About this worksheet
Persuasive techniques are methods writers and advertisers use to convince readers. Bandwagon says everyone is doing it; testimonial uses a famous person or expert; repetition says the same idea again and again; and emotional appeal stirs strong feelings. This worksheet helps students name these techniques so they can read advertising and opinion writing with a critical eye.
Section A on page 1 gives eight example lines from ads and campaigns and asks students to name the technique each one uses. The reference box teaches the four techniques with a toothpaste-ad example that is not reused in any item.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define a persuasive technique, contrast bandwagon with testimonial, and write a testimonial and an emotional-appeal sentence of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward author’s bias and evaluating arguments.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and match each toothpaste example to its technique.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘what is this line trying to make me feel or do?’
Work Section B item 11 together: write a testimonial for a new phone.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.
