About This Reading Comprehension Worksheet

This 4-page reading comprehension worksheet is titled “New Shoes.” Students read a two-page fiction story about Beth, a girl who wears a pair of beloved strawberry shoes to her first day at a new school — even though they are too tight. At school, she meets Amy, who has the same shoes in the wrong size. The story ends with the two girls trading shoes so each pair fits perfectly.

After reading the story, students answer 4 multiple-choice comprehension questions on page 3. A drawing prompt asks students to illustrate the most interesting pair of shoes they have ever seen. An answer key is provided on page 4.

Recommended for Grades 1–2. Works well as an early guided-reading activity or independent reading practice focused on story details, character motivation, and making inferences.
