About this worksheet
This worksheet follows Napoleon Bonaparte from his birth on Corsica in 1769 through his rise as a young commander during the French Revolution, his seizure of power in 1799, the Napoleonic Code that French law still rests on, his self-coronation as emperor in 1804, the catastrophic march on Moscow, and his defeat at Waterloo in 1815.
It also corrects the one thing almost everybody thinks they know about him. Napoleon was not short. His recorded height was given in French inches, which were longer than English ones, and in modern measurement he stood about five feet seven — taller than the average Frenchman of his day. Students get the arithmetic behind a two-hundred-year-old joke, which makes a memorable lesson about checking where a ‘fact’ came from.
Section A asks students to circle the best answer to four multiple choice questions. Section B asks students to write TRUE or FALSE for six statements about the passage. Section C asks students to fill in six missing words. A complete answer key is included on page 3.
