Nadia Comaneci
Nadia Comaneci was born on November 12, 1961, in Onești, Romania. She showed natural athletic talent from a very early age. When she was six years old, gymnastics coach Béla Károlyi spotted her doing cartwheels in a schoolyard and immediately recognized her potential. She began training with Károlyi, and her life in gymnastics had begun. She would go on to become one of the greatest gymnasts in Olympic history.
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Nadia Comaneci — just 14 years old — achieved something no gymnast had ever done before. During her performance on the uneven bars, she executed a routine so flawless and perfectly executed that the judges awarded her a perfect score of 10. The Olympic scoreboard, which had never been designed to display a 10, instead showed ‘1.00.’ The crowd was initially confused, but when the announcer explained, the arena erupted in applause. Comaneci went on to earn seven perfect 10s at those Games.
At the 1976 Olympics, Comaneci won three gold medals (individual all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam), one silver medal, and one bronze medal. She was the first gymnast ever to receive a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastic event. Her performances were defined by extraordinary precision, strength, and elegance. She became an international sensation overnight and inspired a generation of young girls to take up gymnastics around the world.
Comaneci returned to the Olympics in 1980 in Moscow, where she won two more gold medals and two silver medals, cementing her legacy as one of the all-time greats. After retiring from competition, she eventually defected from communist Romania in 1989 — a daring escape that made international news. She later moved to the United States and married fellow Olympic champion Bart Conner.
Today, Nadia Comaneci is a global ambassador for gymnastics and a role model for athletic excellence and perseverance. She works with numerous charities and continues to promote the sport she helped define. Her achievement of the first perfect 10 remains one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history. In 2000, she was named one of the athletes of the century by the international gymnastics federation, a testament to her lasting impact on the sport.
