Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A motif is an image, object, or idea that repeats throughout a story, adding meaning each time it appears and pointing to the theme. This worksheet uses an original passage about a grandmother who gives the narrator seeds, where the seed is a recurring motif that stands for hope and patience.

The reference box and the passage are on page 1. Section A on page 2 gives eight questions about the passage, and students trace the recurring seed and connect it to the message. The reference box teaches motif with a different example, so the questions stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 3 asks students to define a motif, explain how it points to a theme, name the recurring object, and plan a motif of their own. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on symbolism, theme, and imagery.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box and passage aloud and count how many times the seed appears.

Complete Section A on page 2 independently.

Discuss what the repeated seed stands for.

Use the answer key on page 4 for self-check.

Pair with the Symbolism in Literature Worksheet or the Theme Worksheet.
