About this worksheet
Mood and tone are both about feeling but are different. Mood is the feeling the reader gets from a text – scary, peaceful, tense – built by setting, word choice, and events. Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject – serious, playful, angry. The trick: mood is what you feel, tone is what the author feels. This worksheet teaches students to tell the two apart, like the theme-vs-main-idea distinction.
Section A gives eight descriptions (the dark, stormy house makes the reader feel scared; the author writes with great admiration) and asks students to label each mood or tone, balanced four and four. The reference box teaches the difference with its own examples not reused in the items.
Section B is short-answer. Students contrast mood and tone, identify which is the reader’s feeling, explain how an author builds a scary mood, and analyze a playful description. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill sharpens close reading and complements the separate mood and tone worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask the two questions: how do I feel (mood)? how does the author feel (tone)?
Complete Section A independently – have students decide whose feeling each describes.
Discuss Section B item 4 (a funny description of a messy room) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
