Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn in 1963 and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. The best-known moment in his story is a failure: as a sophomore at Laney High School he did not make the varsity basketball team and was put on junior varsity instead. His mother told him to use it, and he spent the year working.
The worksheet takes that seriously rather than treating it as a slogan. What follows is what the work produced: four inches of height by his junior year, the McDonald’s All-American team as a senior, a scholarship to North Carolina, ACC Freshman of the Year, and in March 1982 the shot that won the national championship game against Georgetown.
Chicago drafted him third overall in 1984 and he was Rookie of the Year, but his team kept losing in the playoffs, and it took seven years before the roster around him was good enough to win. The Bulls won in 1991, 1992 and 1993. He then retired, played a season of minor-league baseball for the Birmingham Barons, came back in March 1995, and won three more.
Page 2 has sixteen questions in three forms: multiple choice, true or false, and fill in the missing word. Page 3 is a complete answer key with a short reason recorded beside every false statement. For another sports biography at this level, see the Larry Bird Worksheet.
