About This Reading Comprehension Worksheet
This 4-page reading comprehension worksheet features a short fiction story called “Max and the Scary Dog.” Max is very afraid of a big barking dog behind a fence. When his brother Ben has to turn back, Max must pass the dog alone — and discovers the gate is open. What happens next makes for a surprising ending.
Students read the story across pages 1 and 2, then answer multiple-choice comprehension questions about character feelings, story events, and plot resolution on page 3. The answer key is on page 4.
Recommended for Grades 2–4. Works well as a standalone reading activity or as part of a theme about bravery, facing fears, or pets and animals.
