Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Mary became queen of Scotland six days after she was born and was crowned at nine months old, sitting on her mother’s knee. She was raised in France, married the heir to the French throne, and came home at eighteen to a country she hardly knew. Twenty years later her English cousin had her beheaded.

The reason runs through the whole story: Mary’s grandmother was Henry VIII’s older sister, which put Mary in line for the English throne and made her the rightful queen in the eyes of many English Catholics. That single fact explains the marriage offers, the nineteen years of house arrest, and the execution. The passage also separates what people believed about Lord Darnley’s murder from what was actually proved at trial, which is a useful distinction for students to practice on.

The ending is the part students remember. Elizabeth won every round and still lost the war: she died childless in 1603, and Mary’s son inherited both crowns as James VI of Scotland and James I of England.

Section A asks students to circle the best answer to four multiple choice questions. Section B asks students to write TRUE or FALSE for six statements about the passage. Section C asks students to fill in six missing words. A complete answer key is included on page 3.
