About this worksheet
When students read, they can make a judgment – form an opinion about a character’s choice and explain why, using the story. A judgment is more than a guess; it is an opinion backed by reasons. This worksheet teaches students to evaluate a character’s choices and support their thinking, a key critical-reading skill.
Section A gives eight choices (a boy returns a lost wallet; a girl copies a friend’s homework) and asks students to judge each good or poor. The set balances four clearly-good and four clearly-poor choices so students practice the skill before tackling harder, debatable cases. The reference box teaches the skill with a broken-trust example not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to explain what making a judgment means, why a reason matters, judge a promise-keeping choice with a reason, and judge a choice from a book they know. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward analyzing and evaluating texts.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and stress that a judgment needs a reason, not just an opinion.
Complete Section A independently – have students think of a reason for each judgment.
Work Section B item 12 together: pick a book character’s choice and judge it with a reason.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; accept any judgment backed by a sound reason.
