About This Worksheet
This worksheet gives students practice identifying the main idea of short reading passages. Students read each paragraph, then choose the answer that best describes what the paragraph is mainly about.
The worksheet contains 8 short paragraphs covering familiar topics. Each paragraph is followed by three answer choices. Students select the main idea — not a detail or a supporting fact, but the central point the whole paragraph is about.
An answer key is included on the final page.
Sample Exercise
John and Emily were bored. They were tired of playing video games and wanted to do something different. “What would be fun?” asked Emily. “I don’t know,” said John. “Maybe we can put my new puzzle together.” “That sounds like fun,” said Emily. So, the two friends put the puzzle together.
The main idea is:
a. John and Emily decide to put a puzzle together.
b. John and Emily don’t like video games.
c. John and Emily don’t know what to do for fun.
