What this assessment checks
Three ways the same skill is tested, so a gap shows up as a section rather than a scatter of missed items:
- Stated main idea – finding the sentence that carries it
- Implied main idea – naming an idea the writer never wrote down
- Main idea versus detail, and choosing the best title
How to use it
Give it after main idea has been taught with both stated and implied examples. It works as one 30-minute sitting or as three shorter checks, one passage at a time. Reading the passages aloud is fine if you are measuring comprehension rather than decoding.
Reading the results
Score each passage separately. Strong results on Passage 1 with weak results on Passage 2 mean the student can find a stated main idea but cannot infer one — a different lesson, not more of the same. In the written answers, look for a topic plus a claim about it: “bats” is a topic, “bats help farmers by eating insects” is a main idea.
