About this worksheet
Key details are the smaller pieces of information that tell more about the main idea – they answer who, what, where, when, or why. A detail that does not tell about the main idea is off-topic. This worksheet helps students judge which details support a main idea.
Section A on page 1 sets the main idea ‘Dolphins are very smart animals’ and gives eight details – some about dolphin intelligence, some off-topic about sharks or beaches – and asks students to write supports or off-topic. The reference box teaches the idea with a penguins example.
Section B on page 2 asks what a key detail is, why details matter, to write a supporting detail for a new main idea, and to explain why an off-topic detail does not fit. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on main idea and determining importance.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and review the penguins example.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does this tell me dolphins are smart?’
Discuss why off-topic details do not belong even when they are true.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Main Idea Worksheet or the Determining Importance Worksheet.
