Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Juxtaposition is placing two very different things side by side so their contrast stands out, which writers use to create meaning, surprise, or strong feeling. Recognizing juxtaposition helps students see how an author builds an effect. This worksheet has students spot the contrast and explain what it creates.
Section A on page 1 gives eight short examples, and students decide yes or no whether each uses juxtaposition. The reference box teaches the device with a different example, so the assessed items stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define juxtaposition, explain why writers use it, interpret one contrast, and write an example of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on compare and contrast and irony.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and name the two contrasting things in the example.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask whether the two things clash.
Discuss what feeling each contrast creates.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Compare and Contrast Worksheet or the Irony Worksheet.
