Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Writers often show how a character feels without naming the feeling. To infer an emotion, readers use clues – what a character says, what they do, and how their body reacts. This worksheet builds the read-between-the-lines skill that strong readers use to understand characters.

Section A gives eight short situations (Mia’s hands shook as she walked onto the stage; Ava stomped off and slammed her bedroom door) and asks students to name the emotion each character most likely feels. The reference box teaches the idea with a character who feels embarrassed after tripping, an emotion not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to define inferring an emotion, name two kinds of clues, infer a feeling from a loud voice and red face, and explain why authors show feelings instead of naming them. Page 3 is a complete answer key with reasonable synonyms accepted. The skill builds toward character analysis and inference.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and act out the ’embarrassed’ clues so students see the connection.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘what feeling would make a person act this way?’

Discuss Section A as a class – accept reasonable synonyms (afraid for scared, mad for angry).

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Character Traits Worksheet or the Inference with Short Passages Worksheet for an inference mini-unit.
