What this assessment checks
Inference at three levels, from single-clue to whole-passage:
- Stated versus implied – what the text actually says
- Single-clue inference about a character or setting
- Whole-passage conclusions, and the evidence behind them
How to use it
Give it after inference has been taught as clues plus what you already know. The written items ask for the clue as well as the answer, which is where guessing shows up.
Reading the results
A student who answers correctly but cannot name a clue is guessing well, not inferring — score the answer and the clue separately. The items asking what the text states catch the opposite error: reading in what is not there.
