About this worksheet
An inference and a prediction start from the same two things, a clue in the text and what the reader already knows, but they point in opposite directions. This worksheet teaches students which is which, and why a guess is neither.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box defines inference, prediction, clue, background knowledge, confirm, revise, guess, and unstated. Section A has eight clues to match to the correct term. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every item. The worksheet pairs well with the Inference and Making Predictions worksheets.
