About this worksheet
Imagery is descriptive language that appeals to the five senses – sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Writers use it to help readers picture a scene almost as if they were really there. This worksheet teaches students to notice which sense a description pulls on, a key step toward appreciating vivid writing.
Section A gives eight sentences (Bright red balloons floated above the crowd; The thunder cracked and rumbled across the sky) and asks students to name the sense each appeals to, choosing from sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell. The reference box teaches the idea with golden sunlight spilling across a meadow, an example not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define imagery, list the five senses, write a sentence with smell imagery, and explain why writers use imagery. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward visualizing and analyzing an author’s craft.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask ‘which sense is this description pulling on?’
Complete Section A independently – have students choose from the five sense words in the directions.
Work Section B item 11 together: write a sentence that appeals to the sense of smell.
