What This Worksheet Teaches
This worksheet pairs with a read-aloud of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. After reading the picture book, students complete two short tasks: draw their own version of the very hungry caterpillar, and fill in missing letters in caterpillar-related words like caterpillar, hungry, and apple.
The activity bridges listening comprehension with early literacy. Drawing reinforces the visual story; the fill-in-the-blank task gives early readers a low-stakes way to practice letter recognition and word building tied to vocabulary they just heard.

- Display the drawings on a bulletin board labeled “Our Very Hungry Caterpillars” for parent night
- Send the worksheet home as a take-home activity after a class read-aloud
Common Student Patterns to Watch For
- Drawing the caterpillar in only one color – prompt students to use the bright colors from the book
- Reversing letters in the fill-in – especially p/q and b/d; this is normal for K-1
- Not connecting the words back to the story – revisit each word and ask students to point to where it appeared
- Missing the vowel in hungry – the u is a common gap
