About this worksheet
In many stories a character changes from beginning to end – they learn a lesson, grow braver, or change how they treat others. To see the change, compare how a character acts at the start with how they act at the end, and find the event that caused it. This worksheet teaches character development with an original story.
Section A on page 1 gives an original story about Marcus, who starts the school play wanting all the attention but learns to value his teammates after Nina helps him on opening night. Four questions ask how he acted at the start, what caused the change, how he acted at the end, and the lesson he learned. The reference box teaches the skill but uses no story details.
Section B on page 2 sorts four details as beginning or end (wanted every line for himself; offered to run lines with the cast). Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens character analysis beyond fixed traits.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and explain comparing a character’s start and end.
Read the Marcus story together, then have students answer Section A independently.
For Section B, sort each detail into beginning or end of the story.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Character Traits Worksheet or the Character Motivation Worksheet for a literature mini-unit.
