Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

This is the challenge (grades 5-6) level in a leveled set of three honey bees reading worksheets. The passage is longer and denser, the vocabulary is richer, and the questions move past recall into inference, author’s purpose, and vocabulary in context. The Basic and Standard versions cover the same topic at grades 1-2 and 3-4, so a teacher can differentiate an entire class from one lesson.

The worksheet asks students to think like close readers: four comprehension and vocabulary questions, three inference and author’s-purpose prompts that require textual evidence, a cause-and-effect chain that traces how pollination works, and a constructed response that must cite at least two details from the passage.

The final page is a complete answer key. Objective items show the exact answer; the inference, cause-and-effect, and constructed-response items show concise sample responses and the evidence a strong answer would cite.

How to Use This Lesson

Review the inference reference box and the umbrella example before reading.

Have students read the passage independently and annotate evidence.

Complete Section A (comprehension) and Section C (cause and effect) independently.

Use Section B and Section D for a close-reading discussion; require students to point to the sentence that supports each answer.

Use the answer key to compare student responses against the sample evidence, and assign the Basic or Standard version to students who need a different level.
