A reading lesson on the long history of Halloween – from the ancient Celtic ritual of Samhain (~2,000 years ago) through the legend of Stingy Jack and the jack-o’-lantern, to the Catholic All Saints Day origin of the name, and the modern American trick-or-treat tradition. Comprehension questions follow the reading.

What This Lesson Teaches

Students read a multi-section informational passage on Halloween. The lesson opens with the modern American holiday – October 31, costumes, trick-or-treating – then traces it back about 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain, when the Celts believed the boundary between the spirit world and the living world thinned on the night before their New Year (November 1). The Celts left gifts and disguised themselves in costumes so wandering spirits would not recognize them.

Additional sections cover the jack-o’-lantern, named for the legend of Stingy Jack who tried to make a deal with the Devil and was left to wander the earth carrying a lantern; the name “Halloween” tracing to the Catholic All Saints Day on November 1 (and its eve, Hallows Eve, which became Halloween); and how the holiday evolved in America from immigrant celebrations in the late 1800s, to town-wide parades, to the small-group trick-or-treating tradition that took hold by the 1950s.

How Teachers Use This Worksheet

This is the deepest holiday lesson in our reading set. Because Halloween’s history spans Celtic religious practice, Catholic feast days, immigrant culture, and modern American suburb life, the passage is rich enough to anchor a multi-day social-studies block.

• Use as the October anchor reading in a holidays unit; pair with Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December
• Pair with a Europe map – have students locate the Celtic regions (England, Ireland, northern France) where Samhain originated
• Read aloud or guided reading for grade 4; assign as independent reading for grades 5-7
• Use the Stingy Jack short-answer question (#5) as a one-paragraph written response
• Tie to writing – students compare a Celtic Samhain night to a modern Halloween night, listing what is the same and what is different
• Use the answer key page to score quickly, or hand it to students for self-check

Common Student Mistakes to Watch For

• Treating Halloween as purely modern American – the lesson is explicit that the holiday traces back about 2,000 years
• Confusing Samhain with Hallowmas – Samhain is the original Celtic festival; Hallowmas / Hallows Eve / Halloween came from the Catholic All Saints Day that replaced it
• Missing that costumes had a practical purpose originally – the Celts disguised themselves so spirits would not recognize them, not for fun
• Confusing Halloween with All Souls Day – question 6 specifically tests this; All Saints Day is for saints, on November 1
• Skipping the Stingy Jack legend – the short-answer question requires students to retell it, not just acknowledge it exists
