Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
This worksheet follows Gerald Ford from his birth in Omaha through college football, Navy service in World War II, twenty-five years in the House of Representatives, and the extraordinary sequence that made him president: Vice President Agnew’s resignation, Ford’s appointment under the Twenty-fifth Amendment, Watergate, and Nixon’s resignation in August 1974.
Because Ford is the only person ever to serve as both vice president and president without being elected to either office, the passage doubles as a plain-language introduction to the Twenty-fifth Amendment and how presidential succession actually works. The Nixon pardon is presented as what it was — a decision Ford defended as necessary and that many Americans strongly opposed.
Section A asks students to circle the best answer to four multiple choice questions. Section B asks students to write TRUE or FALSE for six statements about the passage. Section C asks students to fill in six missing words. A complete answer key is included on page 3.
