About this worksheet
The 2000 election makes this biography worth teaching on its own. It came down to one state, the recount ran for more than a month, and it ended in the Supreme Court. Al Gore received more votes nationwide and George W. Bush became president, which is the clearest real-world illustration of how the Electoral College works that American history offers.
The passage is written to be factual rather than argumentative. It gives the reason stated for the invasion of Iraq and then gives what the American search team actually reported in 2004. It notes that new surveillance laws had defenders and critics, and says what each side argued. It puts Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, in that order, which matters because they were separate decisions made a year and a half apart.
Students also meet Hurricane Katrina, the 2006 midterm elections, the 2008 financial crisis, and what a president does after leaving office.
Section A asks students to circle the best answer to four multiple choice questions. Section B asks students to write TRUE or FALSE for six statements about the passage. Section C asks students to fill in six missing words. A complete answer key is included on page 3.
