About this worksheet
Genre is the first thing a strong reader notices in the first paragraph of any new book. Knowing the genre tells the reader what kinds of rules the story follows — whether magic is real, whether the time period matters, whether they should be hunting for clues. This worksheet gives students practice naming the five most common fiction genres they meet in grades 4-6.
Section A gives four original short passages, each clearly demonstrating one genre. Passage A is science fiction (Captain Vega on a colony ship between Mars and the asteroid belt). Passage B is mystery (Tessa’s library book vanishes from her cubby). Passage C is fantasy (Marcus holding a small green dragon). Passage D is historical fiction (Eliza delivering eggs in Ohio in 1863 with Lincoln in town). Students write the genre for each.
Section B raises the difficulty with three short-response items: quote one detail from Passage D that signals its genre, explain whether a story can be both mystery AND science fiction at the same time, and explain why knowing the genre BEFORE reading is useful. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines each genre at the concept level with no specific story examples. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name one book they have read in each of the five genres.
Read each of the four passages aloud once.
Have students complete Section A independently as the classification core.
Discuss Section B item 2 together — many of the strongest modern stories blend two genres.
Pair with the Plot Structure Worksheet or the Setting Analysis Worksheet to keep narrative-analysis skills going.
