About This Activity

This is an elementary reading comprehension lesson built around Paulette Bourgeois’s picture book Franklin Goes to School, in which Franklin the turtle worries his way through the morning of his very first school day — the early waking, the nervous tummy, the bus ride, and the discovery that school turns out to be a good day after all.

The printable is a companion to the book rather than a replacement for it, so you will need a copy to read aloud. It works well as a first-week-of-school read-aloud, where Franklin’s worries give younger students a way to name their own.

Suggested reading level: kindergarten through second grade.

How to Use This Lesson

Read Franklin Goes to School aloud to the class, or have students read it with a partner.

Work through the twenty-three comprehension questions together. They follow the story in order, from what Franklin was worried about to what he gave his parents at the end of the day.
