About this worksheet
A foil is a character whose qualities contrast with another character to make that character’s traits stand out. This worksheet teaches students to recognize foils and to name the trait of the main character that each foil highlights.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box defines a foil, gives a worked example, and includes a black-and-white illustration contrasting a bold hero with a timid foil. Section A has eight pairs of characters – students write the trait the foil highlights. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions about what a foil is and why writers use them.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with the highlighted trait for each pair and sample short answers. The worksheet pairs well with the Protagonist and Antagonist and Character Traits worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and study the bold-hero and timid-foil illustration.
Write the highlighted trait for each pair in Section A on page 1.
Answer the four short-response questions in Section B on page 2.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
