Lesson Overview

Facts vs. Opinions: What’s the Difference?

A fact is a statement that is true and can be verified—looked up, tested, or proven. A opinion is a personal view, preference, or belief. Opinions may be widely shared, but they cannot be proven true or false the way a fact can.

This distinction matters in reading and writing. When students read a report or essay, they need to recognize which statements are backed by evidence and which reflect the author’s perspective. When they write, they need to know when they are stating a verifiable fact and when they are sharing their own opinion.

The printable worksheet below opens with a passage showing this difference through relatable examples (Abraham Lincoln research vs. whether Lincoln was “a cool guy”; pizza facts vs. pizza preferences). Students then classify fifteen statements, ranging from clear facts to clearly personal views.

How to Use This Lesson

1. Distribute the worksheet. Read the introduction passage together as a class or have students read it independently. Discuss the examples before students begin the classification exercise.

2. Students write F (fact) or O (opinion) next to each of the fifteen statements. Encourage students to ask “can this be verified?” for any statement they find difficult.

3. Review answers using the included answer key on page 2. For debatable items, use them as discussion starters: “Why might someone think this is an opinion? What would make it a fact?”
