About this worksheet
Distinguishing fact from opinion is a critical thinking skill that students use long after they finish elementary reading instruction. The reference box at the top of page 1 frames the difference in plain language and gives a quick food-domain example (pizza) so students can hear how the same topic can be discussed with both facts and opinions.
The assessed passage is a short original informational paragraph about penguins. Some sentences in the passage are clean facts; others are deliberately worded as opinions using clue words like wonderful and most interesting. Section A asks students to label five extracted sentences with F or O. Because the items are drawn directly from the passage, students have to read with attention rather than guessing from background knowledge.
Section B moves students from sorting to producing: they write one new fact about penguins (and explain how it could be checked) and one new opinion (and circle the clue word that signals the opinion). That production step locks in the skill far better than another row of F/O sorting would.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud. Discuss what makes the pizza statements a fact vs. an opinion.
Read the penguin passage together. Highlight opinion clue words as a class.
Complete Section A independently. Review answers and explain at least one F and one O.
Use Section B as a quick writing task. Encourage students to use a different clue word than the one in the reference example.
Discuss as a closer: why do good readers separate facts from opinions when they read?
