About this worksheet
A fable is a very short story – usually with animal characters who act like people – that ends with a moral, a lesson about how to live. This worksheet teaches students what a fable is and how to find its moral, using an original fable written for the page so the lesson is fresh.
Section A on page 1 gives an original fable about a hardworking beetle and a carefree cricket, then asks four comprehension questions: what the beetle did, what happened to the cricket, how the beetle treated his friend, and the moral in the student’s own words. The reference box defines fable and moral but does not give the lesson away.
Section B on page 2 is a matching task. A short box lists four common morals (prepare for the future, slow and steady, be kind, do not be greedy), and students match four well-known fable situations to the right moral. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward identifying theme in longer literature.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and define fable and moral before reading the story.
Read the fable together, then have students answer Section A independently.
For Section B, read the four morals aloud, then have students match each situation.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Theme Worksheet or the Story Elements Worksheet for a literature mini-unit.
