Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Explicit information is stated directly in the text – you can point to the exact words. Implicit information is not written out; the author hints at it, and the reader must infer it from clues. This worksheet teaches the difference at the detail level, building on inference and on stated versus implied main idea.
A short original passage about a student named Dev who misses the bus appears on page 1. Section A then lists eight details and asks students to mark each explicit or implicit (for example, ‘The clock showed 7:42’ is explicit, while ‘Dev felt disappointed’ is implicit). The reference box defines both terms with a coat-and-shiver example separate from the passage.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define each kind of information, point to the clues behind two implicit details, and explain why readers must infer. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill complements Inference and Drawing Conclusions.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and the passage aloud.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘are these the exact words, or did I figure it out?’
Discuss Section B items 11-12 (the clues behind the implicit details) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Inference Worksheet or the Drawing Conclusions Worksheet.
