About this worksheet
A source is where information comes from – a book, website, article, or person. Not every source is reliable, so good readers evaluate one before trusting it: a reliable source is usually by an expert, up to date, backed by evidence, and not just trying to sell something. This worksheet teaches the key questions that test a source.
Section A on page 1 lists eight sources and asks students to label each reliable or unreliable (for example, a current article by a marine biologist is reliable, while an ad promising to make you smart overnight is unreliable). The reference box explains the reliability tests with examples different from the eight listed sources.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define evaluating a source, name traits of reliable and unreliable sources, list the questions to ask, and explain why sales-driven sources are risky. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on Claims and Evidence and Author’s Bias.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and write the four questions on the board.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask the four questions about each source.
Discuss Section B item 13 (why sales-driven sources are risky) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Claims and Evidence Worksheet or the Author’s Bias Worksheet.
