Endangered Species Research Project

Endangered species are animals or plants that are at serious risk of becoming extinct — disappearing from Earth forever. Scientists estimate that species are going extinct at a rate far higher than the natural background rate, largely due to human activities: habitat destruction, pollution, overhunting, invasive species, and climate change. When a species goes extinct, it is gone forever — and its disappearance can set off a chain reaction through the ecosystem that depends on it. Conservation efforts around the world aim to slow and reverse this trend.

This project puts students in the role of wildlife researchers working for the Save the Endangered Species Foundation. Each student selects one endangered animal from a provided list and investigates it using available resources — books, encyclopedias, websites, and other research materials. The research covers five key areas: what the animal is and where it lives, why the animal is endangered, what is being done to help save it, what would happen to the ecosystem if it became extinct, and any other interesting facts about the animal.

Students also create a realistic, labeled sketch of their chosen animal for a classroom display. After completing their written research, each student presents their findings to the class in a brief oral report. This project develops multiple skills simultaneously: reading comprehension and note-taking, scientific thinking, visual representation, and public speaking. It also builds empathy for the natural world and an understanding of the connections between human activity and wildlife health.

Endangered animals that students might choose to research include the snow leopard (threatened by habitat loss and poaching in Central Asia), the African elephant (threatened by ivory poaching and habitat loss), the leatherback sea turtle (threatened by ocean pollution and fishing nets), the Sumatran orangutan (threatened by palm oil plantation expansion), the California condor (nearly extinct in the 1980s and now slowly recovering through captive breeding programs), and many others from every continent and ecosystem.

The Endangered Species Act (1973) is one of the most important conservation laws in the United States. It protects species listed as threatened or endangered and their habitats, and has been credited with saving the bald eagle, the gray wolf, the grizzly bear, the American alligator, and many other species from extinction. Internationally, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) regulates the global trade in wildlife products to prevent commercial exploitation from threatening species’ survival. Through this project, students gain firsthand understanding of why these laws matter and how individual species are connected to the health of the entire planet.
