What This Lesson Teaches
Students read a multi-page passage that explains what an earthquake is (a shaking of the ground caused by movement along a fault line), how often they happen, and how scientists measure them with the Richter scale.
A second section walks through four major California earthquakes by date, magnitude, and damage (1906 San Francisco at 8.25; 1983; 1989 Loma Prieta at 6.9; 1994 Northridge at 6.7). The lesson ends with practical earthquake-preparation tips for the home and a Richter Scale chart that gives the magnitude-to-damage mapping students will use in the comprehension questions.

- Missing that the scale is logarithmic – students often read a 6.0 as just “twice” a 3.0; the lesson does not go deep here, so reinforce that each whole number is a big jump
- Skimming past dates in the historical section – the comprehension questions specifically ask about year and damage
- Forgetting that small earthquakes happen daily and most go unnoticed
