About this worksheet
Determining importance means deciding which details matter most for understanding the main idea and which are interesting but minor. Good readers focus on key details and do not get distracted by small ones, which is an essential step toward summarizing. This worksheet gives students focused practice sorting the two.
Section A names a report topic – how honeybees make honey – and gives eight details (Bees collect nectar from flowers; The beekeeper’s truck is painted red). Students label each detail important or minor for that topic. The reference box teaches the idea with a volcanoes report, details not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define determining importance, explain why memorizing every detail is a problem, name an important and a minor detail for a topic, and tell how the main idea guides the decision. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward main idea and summarizing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask ‘does this detail help explain the main idea?’
Complete Section A independently – keep the report topic (how honeybees make honey) in mind for every detail.
Work Section B item 11 together: name one important and one minor detail for a report on how plants grow.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
