About this worksheet
A CVC word is the first word a child can build entirely from sounds, and this sheet works it in both directions. Section A on page 1 asks the student to write the word for each picture, which means hearing all three sounds and choosing a letter for each. Section B on page 2 turns it around and asks them to read five written words and match each to its picture.
Writing first and reading second is deliberate. Spelling a word forces a child to slow down and account for the middle vowel, which is the sound most often lost; matching afterwards checks that they can recover the word from print.
The ten pictures are all short-vowel words with one obvious name, and no picture appears in both sections. Page 3 is the answer key.
It comes in two editions: a full-color PDF and a low-ink black-and-white PDF for everyday copying, both with the same answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and blend the key word together, sound by sound.
Say each Section A picture, stretch it, and write the three letters.
Read the six words in Section B aloud before matching any of them.
Write the matching letter beside each picture, then check page 3.
