About this worksheet
A strong argument does more than state an opinion; it answers the other side. The claim is the writer’s position, a counterclaim is the opposing view, and a rebuttal is the writer’s answer that defends the claim. Including and answering a counterclaim makes an argument more convincing. This worksheet uses an original argument about later school start times to teach the three parts.
The reference box and the argument are on page 1. Section A on page 2 gives eight questions, and students label the claim, counterclaim, and rebuttal and explain their purpose. The reference box teaches the parts with a different example, so the questions stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 3 asks students to define a counterclaim and a rebuttal and to write their own counterclaim and rebuttal for a new claim. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on claims and evidence and persuasive techniques.
How to Use This Lesson
