About this worksheet

Denotation is a word’s plain dictionary meaning, while connotation is the feeling or association it carries beyond that meaning. This worksheet teaches students that words can have positive, negative, or neutral connotations and that word choice shapes how a reader reacts.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box defines denotation, connotation, positive and negative connotation, neutral, word choice, association, and shade of meaning. Section A has eight clues to match to the correct term, including judging a word’s connotation. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.

Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every item. The worksheet pairs well with the Context Clues and Word Choice worksheets.
