About this worksheet
Every story has a conflict, and grades 4-6 readers should be able to name what kind it is. This worksheet uses the standard four-category framing (character vs character, self, nature, society) and tests it in a tight four-passage assessment.
Section A gives four original short passages, each clearly demonstrating one conflict type. Passage A is character vs nature (Mia caught in a sudden winter wind without gloves). Passage B is character vs self (Liam struggling with whether to use a peeked-at answer in the spelling bee). Passage C is character vs society (Sara petitioning an unfair school hat rule). Passage D is character vs character (Theo and Jordan arguing over a notebook). Students write the conflict type for each.
Section B raises the difficulty with three short-response items: quote one detail from Passage B that shows the conflict is happening inside a single character, explain whether Passage C could be character vs society AND character vs self at the same time, and a transfer task asking students to name a conflict from any book or movie they know plus its type. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines conflict and names the four types at the concept level only. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name one conflict from a book they recently read, then say which type it is.
Read each of the four passages aloud once.
Have students complete Section A independently as the classification core.
Discuss Section B item 2 together — many real stories carry both a society conflict AND an internal self conflict at the same time.
Pair with the Plot Structure Worksheet or the Character Traits Worksheet to keep narrative-analysis skills going.
