What this assessment checks

Comparison from single features to whole accounts:

  • Similarities and differences between two subjects
  • Signal words – both, unlike, however, while, whereas
  • Two accounts of the same event, and where they disagree

How to use it

Give it after compare and contrast has been taught with a graphic organizer. Passage 3 gives two accounts of one event, which is the hardest form and the one that appears in later grades.

Reading the results

Watch for students who list facts about each subject without putting them side by side — that is describing, not comparing. In Passage 3 the two accounts agree on the facts and differ only in emphasis; a student who says one account is lying has missed that.
