About this worksheet
Close reading is reading a text carefully and slowly to understand it deeply, by annotating, studying word choice, gathering evidence, and making inferences. This worksheet teaches the steps and strategies of a strong close reader.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box defines the key terms. Section A has eight clue-matching items, the last an applied example. Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. The worksheet pairs well with the Annotating a Text and Citing Text Evidence worksheets.
