The Voyage of the Beagle
Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England, the same day as Abraham Lincoln. Darwin came from a well-off family — his grandfather was the famous physician and naturalist Erasmus Darwin — and he showed a strong interest in natural history from an early age. He collected beetles, minerals, and shells as a boy, and spent more time outdoors than studying. His father, hoping Charles would become a physician, sent him to Edinburgh University to study medicine, but Darwin found surgery so distressing that he abandoned medicine and transferred to Christ’s College, Cambridge, to study theology instead.
At Cambridge, Darwin met the botanist John Stevens Henslow, who recognized Darwin’s keen powers of observation and enthusiasm for natural history. When Henslow was offered the post of naturalist aboard HMS Beagle for a surveying voyage around the world, he recommended Darwin for the position. Darwin’s father initially objected, fearing the voyage was a waste of time, but his uncle Josiah Wedgwood II persuaded him otherwise. Darwin boarded the Beagle on December 27, 1831. The voyage was originally planned to last two years but ended up taking nearly five years, sailing down the coast of South America, around Cape Horn, through the Pacific, and back to England.
The voyage changed Darwin’s life. He collected thousands of specimens of plants, animals, fossils, and rocks, sending them back to England for analysis. In South America he found fossils of enormous extinct mammals closely related to living species, suggesting that species could change over time. In the Galapagos Islands, he observed that each island had its own distinct species of finch, tortoise, and mockingbird, subtly different from those on nearby islands. These observations planted the seeds of an idea that would take Darwin more than 20 years to develop and publish.
The Theory of Evolution
After returning to England in 1836, Darwin spent years carefully analyzing his specimens and observations. He read Thomas Malthus’s essay on population, which argued that organisms produce more offspring than can survive, and this gave him a key insight: in the struggle for survival, individuals with favorable variations would be more likely to survive and reproduce, passing those traits to their offspring. Over many generations, this process — which Darwin called natural selection — would cause populations to gradually change and eventually give rise to new species. Darwin had developed the core of his theory of evolution.
Darwin spent more than 20 years accumulating evidence and refining his theory before publishing it. He finally published “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection” in 1859, driven partly by the news that naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace had independently arrived at the same theory. The book sold out on its first day of publication and immediately sparked intense debate. Scientists debated the evidence, and religious leaders argued that the theory contradicted the biblical account of creation. Darwin’s friend Thomas Henry Huxley became his most vocal public defender, debating critics on Darwin’s behalf while Darwin, who suffered from chronic illness, worked quietly at his home in Kent.
Darwin continued to work and publish for the rest of his life, producing books on orchids, barnacles, insectivorous plants, earthworms, and the expression of emotions in animals. He also published “The Descent of Man” in 1871, in which he argued that humans had evolved from earlier primates and shared a common ancestor with great apes. Darwin died on April 19, 1882, and was honored with a state burial in Westminster Abbey, near the tomb of Isaac Newton. His theory of evolution by natural selection is today considered the unifying framework of modern biology.
