About this worksheet
Identifying character traits is a foundational reading-comprehension skill that asks students to move past surface-level ‘what happened’ thinking and analyze why characters act the way they do. This worksheet teaches the ‘show, don’t tell’ reading move: a trait is not what the author says about a character; it is what the character actually does in the story.
A reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the skill with a familiar folktale example (the Tortoise and the Hare) so the assessed passage stays fresh. The assessed passage is an original short story that reveals at least four distinct traits through specific actions – making a list, helping a friend with a heavy box, patiently re-explaining prices to a younger student, and refusing to quit when sales are slow.
The final page is a complete answer key showing the four gold-standard traits with the action that supports each, plus brief sample answers for the short-response items, organized in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and discuss ‘show, don’t tell’ with the Tortoise/Hare example.
Read ‘Ben and the Bake Sale’ aloud once, then have students reread it silently and underline every concrete action Ben takes.
Have students complete Section A independently by matching one trait to each underlined action.
Use Section B as guided practice – model how to choose a trait and back it up with passage evidence on item 1, then let students work independently on items 2-3.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
