About this worksheet
A character’s motivation is the reason or goal behind what they do – characters act because they want something, feel something, or need to solve a problem. Finding motivation means asking what a character wants and why they took an action. This worksheet teaches the skill with an original story and a matching activity.
Section A on page 1 gives an original story about Priya, who wakes before sunrise all week to draw for the town art fair. Four questions ask what she did, why she did it, how this year differs from last, and what her effort shows about what she wanted. The reference box defines motivation but uses no story details.
Section B on page 2 is a matching task: students match four actions (a boy practicing piano; a girl sharing an umbrella) to the motivation behind each – to win a prize, help a friend, stay safe, or learn a skill. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds deeper character analysis.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and define motivation: the reason behind an action.
Read the Priya story together, then have students answer Section A independently.
For Section B, read the four motivations, then have students match each action.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Character Traits Worksheet or the Comparing Characters Worksheet for a literature mini-unit.
