About this worksheet
Cause and effect is the connective tissue of every story and informational text students read: events do not happen in isolation, and good readers learn to ask what made this happen and what happened as a result. The reference box at the top of page 1 frames the cause-and-effect link with a kitchen example (spilled milk) and lists the signal words that most often connect a cause to an effect.
The assessed passage is a short original informational paragraph about a class garden across one month. The passage is deliberately seeded with several cause-and-effect chains and uses signal words from the reference list (because, as a result, since, so). Section A gives students four prompts — two with the cause supplied and two with the effect supplied — and asks them to write the missing half.
Section B pushes students past the passage into application. They find one signal word from the text and explain the cause and effect it links, then they predict an effect for a new hypothetical cause (a heavy storm flooding the garden). That last item is the most rigorous on the page — it asks students to do cause-and-effect reasoning rather than just locate it.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and unpack the spilled-milk example into one clear cause and at least two effects.
Read the garden passage with students. Have them circle every signal word they find as they read.
Complete Section A independently. Review a couple of items as a class to reinforce the pattern.
Use Section B as a short written reasoning task. Encourage students to use a different signal word from the one in the reference example.
Discuss as a closer: when does a writer choose to use a signal word vs. leave the link implied?
